Our overall goal in this area from 1997 was to contribute importantly toward getting the global Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination program successfully under way, and toward the effective, efficient elimination of this disease and its consequences.
We aimed to stimulate momentum towards lymphatic filariasis elimination at the global level. HDI stimulated and helped organize key meetings to help ensure proper coordination of efforts among countries, regions of the world, and partners, including national programs, international organizations, corporations and non-governmental agencies.
Our second aim in Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination was to work with selected countries toward demonstrating the feasibility of nation-wide elimination of lymphatic filariasis.
To succeed here, we:
- Worked with Ghana, the lymphatic program of which HDI helped start, to help identify and address impediments to LF Elimination in Ghana.
- Work with Togo, which started an Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination program after HDI and world-class Lymphatic Filariasis epidemiologist Dr. John Gyapong from Ghana visited Togo in 1997, and informed Togo’s Ministry of Health about the feasibility eliminating Lymphatic Filariasis .
- Identified the level of external funding needed for elimination activities in Ghana and Togo and worked with the programs there to mobilize such resources.
- Initiated and supported key initiatives to help Ghana and Togo coordinate their lymphatic filariasis elimination efforts.
